Director of Business Development

JOB TITLE: Director of Business Development
STATUS: Full Time Exempt

The Director of Business Development is responsible for planning, implementing and overseeing both short and long-term sales initiatives. This role will target existing and new markets by performing the following duties personally or through others.


Primary responsibilities

Sales Growth

  • Achieve or exceed sales goals to grow market share and revenue
  • Provide a long-term vision and strategy for the department, identifying benchmarks and a means to achieve them
  • Increase share of wallet sales with existing clients
  • Provide input on marketing direction and strategy
  • Ensure alignment of sales team with marketing initiatives


  • Directly supervises the efforts of Outside Sales Representatives, Sales Support Coordinator and Cardlock Customer Service Representatives
  • Oversee and direct performance of contracted inside sales representatives
  • Ensure individual and team accountability to sales goals and expectations
    • Work with leadership to develop departmental revenue and expense budgets forecasts and goals
  • Develop outside sales team members
    • Clearly communicate expectations, both verbal and written, to direct-reports
    • Provide coaching, mentoring and constructive feedback
    • Create an annual training plan for all product line and market segments for direct-reports
    • Consistently ride along with sales representatives on customer sales calls
  • Uphold company values and reputation by maintaining a high standard of conduct

Service to Clients, Vendors & Team

  • Ensure customer satisfaction and retention
    • Cultivate and deepen client relationships by meeting with them, assisting sales representative with maintaining relationships and negotiating and closing deals
    • Act as a point of contact to help resolve customer issues or concerns
    • Create monthly, quarterly and annual individual goals for sales representatives reps to ensure achievement of departmental goals
    • Holds consistent sales team meetings to assess current progress towards goals
  • Maintain vendor requirements and standards
    • Work with key vendors to set and achieve goals
  • Work collaboratively with other departments, managers and company leadership
    • Provide input in and support of marketing initiatives and processes
    • Provide consistent and accurate sales reports and data to management

Performance Metrics:

  • Achievement of sales revenue goals
  • New customer acquisition
  • Customer retention
  • Increase of revenue per account
  • Individual sales reps improvement and achievement of goals

Requirements for the Role:

  • Experience managing a multi-region sales team
  • A driving record that indicates safe and lawful driving
  • Participation in off-hours events such as trade shows, customer events, and community events as required
  • Experience with CRM software
  • Typing, 30 WPM
  • Past sales management experience
  • Good technical, computer, and mobile device skills. Proficient with Windows, Excel

  • Frequent standing, sitting, bending, lifting, hand & finger movements associated with typing, 10-key and telephone operation, near, mid-range and far
